You choose what comes into your Shelf
You can add information manually or connect accounts from other services.
When you instruct Shelf to connect a service, Shelf accesses information on your behalf and will never take any actions on those services, unless you instruct it to do so explicitly.
Your Shelf may include:
Information you provide, such as your profile, preferences and content you add
Activity from services you choose to connect
Insights or inferences Shelf generates about your preferences and characteristics
Shelf uses your information to serve you
We use information to operate Shelf, organize and store your data, generate personalized insights, provide features you request, support you, protect the service and improve or develop Shelf.
We may also create aggregated or de-identified information to understand patterns across the Shelf community, improve the product, support research and surface trends or discoveries. We maintain this information in a form that cannot reasonably be linked back to you.
How we protect your information
Shelf intends to get as close to local-first as possible. Today, Shelf uses safeguards designed to protect your personal information, including keeping data encrypted in transit using TLS and maintaining personal context in Shelf’s databases encrypted at rest.
Building toward more precise control
As Shelf grows into a platform for personal apps, we want you to have increasingly precise control over how your information is used. We imagine a future where you set your own privacy policy that other services must abide by, versus the other way around.
Our direction is to let you decide which apps and services can use which parts of your Shelf, and for what purpose. We will distinguish clearly between controls available today and those still being developed.

Beyond building Shelf, we've worked with coalitions at the forefront of developments around how to protect consumer data rights, including by supporting efforts to work with policymakers and alliances that advocate for data rights. We are also founding members of the Data Transfer Initiative and signatories of the Inspired Internet Pledge and engage with our users and other members of the online community to work toward a safer and healthier Internet for everyone.
